Small Planet Journeys to Peru

Itinerary

Day 1 : Your overnight flight from JFK will land in Lima, on Peru's Pacific Coast, where El Nino is born. Due to prevailing Andean winds, flights to Cuzco only take off in the morning, so you will only be in Lima briefly before catching the flight to Cuzco. We'll have lunch in Cuzco before heading off on the bus for our tour of Awanakancha coop on the way to our hotel in the village of Pisaq.

Day 2: An introduction to the Sacred Valley of the Incas. We will traveling along the Urubamba River, with a hike and tour of the ruins of Ollantaytambo on the way. In late afternoon we'll return to Pisaq

Day 3 Pisaq's richly textured Sunday market takes place today.Villagers converge from miles around to barter and sell an unimaginable array of handmade arts and crafts, the quantity and quality of which will delight and astonish you.
In the morning we'll visit the fascinating market.
The afternoon will feature a hike where high above modern Pisaq, footpaths and stone stairs traverse ancient terraces offering incomparable vistas for painting, pondering, sketching, journaling and endless photo-ops.

Day 4 An early train will carry us down the tumultuous Urubamba river to the town of Aguas Calientes,at the edge of the rainforest, and at the foot of Machu Picchu.Keep your eyes peeled for river otters, flocks of parrots, orchids and bromeliads! A guided tour will introduce us to the towering ruins, after which you'll have time to wander on your own. Climb to Huayna Pichu or walk down the Inca trail to Aguas Calientes. Night in Aguas Calientes.

Day 5 We'll get up early to catch the sunrise at Machu Picchu. The sheer splendour of the landscape; the breathtaking Andes; the astonishing stonework and engineering; the details; the color; the flora and fauna; the mystery... will amaze you. A buffet lunch at the top will give us a chance to gather together to head down the Inca trail (or ride the bus down if you prefer) and catch the "Backpacker Train" to Cuzco.

Day 6 A guided tour will introduce us to the famed Inca capital of Cuzco, the "belly button" of the Inca culture. Morning will focus on ancient Incan and Spanish colonial sites in the center of the city. In the afternoon we'll explore the ruins of Sacsayhuaman, Q'enqo and Tambomachay on outlying mountainsides near the city.

Day 7: Our journey today will take us through the vast valleys of the Andean altiplano passing through the highest point of our journey at 14,000 ft altitude. Our day-long ride will include visits to five astonishing Colonial, Incan and pre-Incan sites, and will bring us to a comfortable evening in the Colonial city of Puno on the shores of Lake Titicaca.

Day 8: A day on the lake! Enjoy a fascinating boat ride on the world's highest navigable lake, 12,000 ft. above sea level. We'll visit the Islas Uros, man-made, floating reed islands, and Isla Taquile, which has been inhabited since Pre-Incan times.

Day 9: An early flight will bring us back to the capital city of Lima on the Pacific Coast.. After dropping our baggage off at the hotel, we'll tour colonial Lima visiting the Plaza de Armas, then spend the afternoon at the Parque del Amor..
