Liza refers to herself as a citizen of the western hemisphere, having lived, studied and traveled on both continents and beyond.
"Visionary realism" is the term she uses to describe her paintings, using information from acute examination of the natural world to create a personal reality. Light, color and shadow inform us of a complex world of mystery and beauty.
Liza began sculpting as a small child, transforming the native red clays in her back yard into tiny coil vessels and sculpture. In third grade, at the age of 7 she made her first goddess figurine. Clay is another language for her, and a place of great comfort. It's abundance, malleability and enduring qualities make it a perfect three dimensional medium.
Liza has lived in the Southwest desert, the rainforest, the Andes, the Rockies, as well as other places. For the last 24 years she has been a resident of Vermont. Each of these far flung places informs her work, as she explores connectivity and distance, and intimate details of the physical realm.
